Remember The Sizzle?
Posted by Hostess Kate | Deep End Pizza
A special night out. A red plastic cup. A pan pizza arriving at the table still spitting, with a thick golden crust and cheese pulled all the way to the crispy rim. For a lot of us, that was the pizza night: the all-you-can-eat treat at Pizza Hut, which defined family dinners in the 80s.
Pizza Hut is reportedly spending $10 million on a rebrand. We went the other way. It's back, and it's on the menu at Deep End. Say hello to the 80's Original Pan Pizza.
While the big names rebrand, we went back
The pizza everyone remembers was never about a logo. It was the thick golden crust, the crispy rim and the sizzle at the table. That's the thing worth keeping, and it's what a $10 million rebrand can't buy back.

So while Pizza Hut spends big on a new look, we spent two years on the old taste. No rebrand. Just a husband-and-wife team, Chef Paul in the kitchen and Kate out front, doing the same thing properly, day after day.
If you reckon the best pizza doesn't need a rebrand, back the locals who've stayed consistent.
Like it used to taste
Deep End is already the only restaurant in Australia serving six regional American pizza styles. The 80's Original Pan is our sixth, and probably our most nostalgic: a love letter to the pizza that defined family pizza night for a generation.
Thick, hand-pressed crust. Cheese pulled to the rim. Sizzling straight to your table. We reckon it tastes even better than you remember.
Chef Paul's obsession
Chef Paul grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, so he knows his pizza. But this one was personal. He spent two years watching old 80s training videos of Pizza Hut on YouTube, studying how the pan pizza used to taste back when an all-you-can-eat night out was a big deal.
Then came the waiting: seven months for the right pans to be shipped over from the States, plus lots and lots of testing.

Sold out at Pizza of the 'Burbs
We debuted it as a pop-up at Molly Rose in Collingwood on Saturday 25 July, as part of Broadsheet's Dine Out Festival. It sold out. The DMs haven't stopped since, so it's now a permanent fixture on our menu. Broadsheet gave it a shout-out too.
Made by hand, in the pan
The 80's Original Pan Pizza is a 14-inch, hand-pressed pan pizza that serves 2 to 3 people, finished tableside. Pick from three classic flavours:
- Cheese: $38
- Pepperoni: $45
- Supreme: $51
Come in and try it. We make a limited number of doughs each day, so book ahead if you can.
